Qiyam al-Layl—standing in prayer at night—is a powerful act of worship that connects you with your Creator in the stillness of the night. But how exactly should it be performed? How many rak’ahs? And when’s the best time? Let’s explore.
How Many Rak’ahs in Qiyam al-Layl (Tahajjud)?
There isn’t a fixed number of rak’ahs for Qiyam al-Layl. The Prophet ﷺ said:
“صَلاةُ اللَّيْلِ مَثْنَى مَثْنَى، فإذا خَشِيَ أحَدُكُمُ الصُّبْحَ، صَلَّى رَكْعَةً واحِدَةً تُوتِرُ له ما قدْ صَلَّى”
“The night prayer is two by two. If you fear dawn is approaching, then pray one rak‘ah to make what you prayed odd.”
(Narrated by Muslim, 749)
He ﷺ also said:
“الصلاةُ خيرُ موضوعٍ استَكثِرْ أو أَقِلَّ”
“Prayer is the best matter, so perform it as much or as little as you wish.”
(Narrated by Ibn al-Mulaqqin, Tuhfat al-Muhtaj, 1/422 – Authentic or Hasan)
The Prophet ﷺ typically prayed either eleven or thirteen rak’ahs. Aishah (RA) said:
“ما كانَ يَزِيدُ في رَمَضَانَ ولَا في غيرِهِ علَى إحْدَى عَشْرَةَ رَكْعَةً…”
“The Prophet never prayed more than eleven rak‘ahs in Ramadan or otherwise…”
(Narrated by al-Bukhari, 3569)
Abdullah ibn Abbas (RA) said:
“كَانَتْ صَلَاةُ النبيِّ صَلَّى اللهُ عليه وسلَّمَ ثَلَاثَ عَشْرَةَ رَكْعَةً يَعْنِي باللَّيْلِ”
“The Prophet ﷺ used to pray thirteen rak‘ahs at night.”
(Narrated by al-Bukhari, 1138)
Some scholars explained the difference by saying the additional two rak‘ahs may be the sunnah of Fajr, or light units the Prophet started his night with.

When Can You Pray Qiyam al-Layl?
Scholars agree: Qiyam al-Layl begins after ‘Isha prayer and lasts until Fajr. It doesn’t matter whether you sleep before or not, though sleeping before is preferred.
Night is divided into three parts:
- First third of the night
- Middle third of the night
- Last third of the night – the best time for Qiyam!
The Prophet ﷺ said:
“يَنْزِلُ رَبُّنَا تَبَارَكَ وتَعَالَى كُلَّ لَيْلَةٍ إلى السَّمَاءِ الدُّنْيَا…”
“Our Lord descends each night to the lowest heaven when the last third of the night remains and says: ‘Who will call upon Me so I may respond?…’”
(Narrated by al-Bukhari, 1145)
He ﷺ also said:
“أقربُ ما يكونُ الربُّ من العبدِ في جوفِ الليلِ الآخرِ…”
“The closest the Lord is to His servant is in the last part of the night, so if you can be among those who remember Allah at that time, then do so.”
(Narrated by al-Tirmidhi, 3579 – Authenticated by al-Albani)
How to Perform Qiyam al-Layl
Simple: pray in sets of two rak‘ahs. That’s it.
“مَثْنَى مَثْنَى…”
“Two by two…”
(Narrated by Muslim, 749)
That means you end with taslim (salām) every two rak‘ahs. You can close your night prayer with one rak‘ah of Witr.
Why Is Qiyam al-Layl So Special?
Think of it like this: Qiyam is a personal, late-night meeting with your Lord. No distractions. Just you and your Creator.
Here’s why it’s so powerful:
✅ Boosts Your Faith
You speak to Allah privately. You worship out of love, not just duty.
“وَمِنَ اللَّيْلِ فَتَهَجَّدْ بِهِ نَافِلَةً لَكَ…”
“And during the night, pray with it as an extra [deed] for you—perhaps your Lord will raise you to a praised station.”
(Surah Al-Isra, 17:79)
✅ Helps You Worship with Focus
Night is quiet. No messages. No deadlines. Just clarity and calm. That’s why Allah said:
“إِنَّ نَاشِئَةَ اللَّيْلِ هِيَ أَشَدُّ وَطْئًا وَأَقْوَمُ قِيلًا”
“Indeed, the hours of the night are more effective for concurrence [of heart and tongue] and more suitable for words.”
(Surah Al-Muzzammil, 73:6)
✅ Shows True Gratitude
Even when forgiven, the Prophet ﷺ prayed until his feet swelled.
“يا عَائِشَةُ أَفلا أَكُونُ عَبْدًا شَكُورًا”
“O Aishah, should I not be a thankful servant?”
(Narrated by Muslim, 2820)
The Benefits of Qiyam al-Layl
Here’s what you gain:
- Sign of piety: “كَانُوا قَلِيلًا مِّنَ اللَّيْلِ مَا يَهْجَعُونَ”
“They used to sleep but little of the night.”
(Surah Adh-Dhariyat, 51:17) - Ticket to Paradise: “صلُّوا والنَّاسُ نيامٌ تدخلوا الجنَّةَ بسلامٍ”
“Pray while others sleep and you will enter Paradise in peace.”
(Narrated by al-Tirmidhi, 2485 – Authentic) - Enormous reward: “فَلَا تَعْلَمُ نَفْسٌ مَّا أُخْفِيَ لَهُم مِّن قُرَّةِ أَعْيُنٍ”
“No soul knows what joy is hidden for them as a reward…”
(Surah As-Sajdah, 32:17) - Elevated status: “أَمَّنْ هُوَ قَانِتٌ آنَاءَ اللَّيْلِ…”
“Is one who is devoutly obedient during periods of the night… equal to one who does not?”
(Surah Az-Zumar, 39:9) - Best voluntary prayer: “وأَفْضَلُ الصَّلاةِ بَعْدَ الفَرِيضَةِ صَلاةُ اللَّيْلِ”
“The best prayer after the obligatory ones is the night prayer.”
(Narrated by Muslim, 1163)
