This month of Muharram is one of the four months that are sacred according to Allah.
” Surely, the number of months according to Allah is twelve (as written) in the Book of Allah on the day He created the heavens and the Earth, of which there are Four Sacred Months. That is the right faith. So, do not wrong yourself therein. And fight the Mushriks all together, as they fight you all together, and be sure that Allah is with the God-fearing”
al-Tawbah 9:36 (Al-Quran)
These four months, as per the Prophet ﷺ are Dhul-Qa’dah, Dhul-Hijjah, Muharram and Rajab. (Bukhaari)
Fasting on the Day of ‘Aashura(10th Muharram)
Ibn ‘Abbaas said:
“The Prophet (pbuh) came to Madeenah and saw the Jews fasting upon the arrival of ‘Aashooraa’. He said, ‘What is this?’ They said, ‘This is an exemplary day, it is the day when Allah spared the Children of Israel from their adversaries, so prophet Mosa (AS) fasted on this day.’ He (pbuh) said, ‘We have more right to prophet Mosa (AS) than you,’ so he fasted on that day and told [the Muslims] to fast on that day.”
(Bukhaari)
In the event that one fast on the tenth of Muharram, Allah will pardon the wrongdoings of the earlier year.

A few Misconceptions and Baseless Traditions
There are numerous wrong conventions connected with the Day of Aashurah and Muharram, which have nothing to do with Shariah. We need to monitor ourselves from falling into these wrong customs and bid’ah in light of the fact that this is an additional sin.
- A group of Muslims thinks the sacredness of Aashurah is because of Imam Husain, RA. Undoubtedly, the account of Hadhrat Husain (RA) is a standout amongst the most terrible scenes of our history. Yet, the sacredness of “Ashura” can’t be attributed to this occasion for the straightforward reason that the holiness of “Ashura” was set up during the Prophet’s times ﷺ, much sooner than the conception of his grandson Hadhrat Husain (RA).
- Some individuals think about Muharram as a malevolent or unfortunate month, for Husain, RA was killed in it. So they don’t hold weddings, and different festivals this month. This is again an outlandish idea, which is in opposition to the Quran’s teachings and the Sunnah. Having superstitions.
- Some individuals grieve and regret the demise of Imam Hussain RA and hold exceptional functions for this very reason.
In any case, the Prophet ﷺ has prohibited us from holding grieving functions on the demise of any individual, which was the general population’s act of jahiliyyah (obliviousness).
“He is not from our gathering who slaps his checks, tears his garments, and cries in the general population’s way of ignorance.” (Bukhaari)
Also, looking at the situation objectively, it is the best legitimacy and prize that Hussain RA got when he achieved affliction for the purpose of Allaah. - Some individuals go to the next amazing and spruce up and cook uncommon dishes, and so on as a sort of festivity during the current Day and that is ALSO against the Quraan and Sunnah.
Important:
Doing sadaqah ( giving charity) or cocking meals and distributing them, giving them to the poor, and doing any other good deeds is not bid’ah it’s good to do good deeds as much as we can on that special day.
In Conclusion:
Our actions in Muharram ought to be similar to the conduct of the Sahabah, not one of grieving, nor one of festivity. Maybe, we ought to esteem Muharram as one of Allaah’s holy months in which we ought to endeavor to do great deeds and be additionally watchful of erring. We ought to attempt and quick as much as we can in this month, particularly the ninth and tenth. We ought not to be superstitious about it (or for whatever else, besides) and on the off chance that somebody needs to get hitched amid it, they should.
