Supplications for Sincere Repentance and Drawing Closer to Allah

by Hadia Mukhtar

Muslim making dua for forgiveness and sincere repentance to Allah.

Repentance (توبة) is not just about saying Astaghfirullah — it’s about returning to Allah with a sincere heart. The Prophet ﷺ taught beautiful supplications that help us seek forgiveness and rebuild our connection with our Creator.

A Beautiful Supplication for Repentance

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:

“O Allah, You are the King, there is no deity but You. You are my Lord, and I am Your servant. I have wronged myself and acknowledge my sins. So forgive all my sins, for none forgives sins except You. Guide me to the best of manners; none guides to the best except You, and turn away from me evil manners; none turns them away except You. Here I am, at Your service, and all goodness is in Your Hands. Evil is not attributed to You. I am Yours and I return to You. You are Blessed and Exalted. I seek Your forgiveness and repent to You.”
(Sahih Muslim, Hadith No. 771)

This heartfelt du’a teaches humility, acknowledgment of sin, and total dependence on Allah — the true foundation of tawbah (repentance).

General Supplications for Sincere Repentance

Here are several powerful supplications a Muslim can say when seeking forgiveness and turning back to Allah:

“O Allah, I seek Your forgiveness for every sin I walked to with my feet, reached with my hands, looked at with my eyes, listened to with my ears, or spoke with my tongue — and then used the blessings You provided to disobey You. Yet You concealed it from people and did not deprive me of Your favors. O Most Generous, forgive me.”
“O Allah, You are the King, there is no god but You. I am Your servant; I have wronged myself and confess my sins, so forgive me all my sins. None forgives sins but You.”
“O Allah, guide me to the best of manners; none guides to the best except You. Keep me away from bad manners; none can keep them away except You.”
“O my Lord, You accept repentance from Your servants and pardon their sins, and You love those who repent. Accept my repentance, forgive my sins, and grant me Your love.”
“O Allah, I repent to You from everything that displeased You — from thoughts of my heart, glances of my eyes, or words of my tongue. Grant me a repentance that protects every part of me from sin.”
“O Allah, I repent to You right now from all my sins — major and minor, hidden and open — with a repentance so sincere that I will never return to sin again.”

Supplications for Forgiveness and Erasing Sins

Here are more beautiful du’as that help erase sins and bring spiritual peace:

“O Allah, I stretch my hands toward You and place all my hope in You. Accept my repentance, have mercy on my weakness, forgive my mistakes, and grant me a share of every goodness.”
“O Allah, I seek Your forgiveness for every sin committed in the light of day or the darkness of night, in public or in private, knowingly or unknowingly.”
“I seek forgiveness from Allah and repent to Him for everything that displeases Him — in words, actions, or thoughts.”
“I seek forgiveness from Allah the Almighty, fleeing from His anger to His pleasure, from His punishment to His mercy.”
“I seek forgiveness from Allah, there is no god but Him, the Ever-Living, the Sustainer. I repent to Him from all sins that bring harm or remove blessings.”

Why Sincere Repentance Matters

True repentance (التوبة النصوح) isn’t just about words — it’s about:

  • Regretting past sins deeply.
  • Stopping the sin immediately.
  • Making a firm intention never to return.
  • Following repentance with good deeds and prayer.

Allah says:

“Indeed, Allah loves those who repent and those who purify themselves.”
(Surah Al-Baqarah, 2:222)
